Command and Control
Voice recognition is very effective when the speech engine
knows what might be said, where the speaker is selecting from a large but known set
of possible phrases. This is called command and control. Voice
recognition can be very accurate for data entry by command and control, even in
noisy conditions – such as a sports crowd – and even for an untrained
engine.
Voice recognition can be useful for hands-free control of machinery and electronic equipment. The VocalLinkTM
Voice Control Software for Tektronix Oscilloscopes is typical
of instrument control: the users keep their hands and eyes steady while
controlling the analysis tools by voice. Mechanics, construction and utility workers,
repair technicians, and many other professions would benefit from voice
commands. These users train themselves to be effective and to make the most of
their hands-free capabilities.
Most computer-based equipment can be controlled
safely using voice commands even when commands might be misrecognized, although
prudent design requires
that commands with serious consequences be confirmed before serious steps are taken.
