Voice Recognition and Your Applications
Today, all new PCs are capable of using speech recognition.
By the end of this year, all new Tablet PCs and PDAs will be capable of using speech recognition. The current version of Microsoft's best-selling application, Office XP, and its newest version of Windows, Windows XP, include integrated speech recognition.
The quality of
the Microsoft speech engine is good, especially for command and control
applications. Other speech engines are available with features such as specialized vocabularies, highly reliable recognition of small
sets of words, smaller memory footprint, or lower CPU demands. Specialized
microphones, such as array microphones, and advanced signal processing
algorithms allow for speech recognition in most environments, including
automobiles and noisy factories.
Speech can be a tremendous asset to an application. It can reduce overload, simplify data access, speed data entry,
and allow hands-free control. The following pages show examples of
applications that are improved with the addition of speech recognition.
