Mark’s Computer Based Solutions Wins
Microsoft’s Office XP Solutions Challenge in the Pacific Northwest
Winning Application features SpeechStudio Lexicon
Builder for Office XP
Portland, OR-June 20, 2001:
Speech recognition is the centerpiece of the application Mark
Pearson showcased in the Microsoft Office XP Solution Challenge, where Pearson
won top honors for the Pacific Northwest. The application, in the running for
the national title to be awarded at Fusion 2001, highlights the advanced
features of Office XP. Fusion 2001, held in Anaheim, California beginning July
13th, is Microsoft’s annual conference for Business Partners and
Certified Partners, and attracts nearly 4,000 professionals.
The new application, designed to improve the productivity and
accuracy of speech-enabled Microsoft Office XP applications for physicians,
integrates Word 2002 with an Access database. "To demonstrate the power of
Office XP, we upgraded the electronic medical records package called SOAP Notes
with speech recognition, pen-based input, and two-way smart tags to give
physicians complete access and dictation capability within their medical records
from Word 2002," say Pearson, of Mark's Computer Based Solutions (http://www.m-cbs.com).
"Physicians can update records without switching applications because two-way
smart tags update the database directly from Word 2002. Our solution is geared
towards making doctors more efficient, and dictated medical record information
more accurate."
Pearson has been involved in speech recognition for eight years.
He says, "Always tell the computer what you are going to say before speaking to
it by populating the vocabulary", citing missing words as the number one cause
of failure. Pearson uses SpeechStudio Lexicon Builder™ for Office XP to create personalized vocabularies for doctors, lawyers, knowledge workers, and
others, enabling high-quality speech recognition.
After creating a custom vocabulary, the other keys to successful
dictation are to insure the computer is set up properly for dictation, with
enough horsepower and a good sound card. And, Pearson adds, “The user needs to
practice speaking clearly. I recommend the book Speaking Clearly by
Jeffrey Hahner."
"The Office XP solution from Mark’s Computer Based Solutions is
impressive and innovative. The ability to send information directly from Word to
a database using two-way smart tags shows how Office XP solutions can be easier
to use and more efficient,” said Lisa Gurry, product manager, Microsoft Office.
“This solution also showed how speech recognition can be extended with
SpeechStudio Lexicon Builder and enable a customer to dictate complex documents
without errors."
